Which volume range should I choose?

Choose the range whose maximum is just above the volume you pipette most often, because pipettes are most accurate in the upper part of their range. Use 2–20 µL for volumes up to 20 µL, 10–100 µL for 10 to 100 µL, 20–200 µL for 20 to 200 µL and 100–1000 µL for 100 µL to 1 mL.

What does fully autoclavable mean?

On a partly autoclavable pipette only the lower section can be steam sterilised. On this model the entire pipette can go into the autoclave, which helps in sterile work where the whole instrument must be decontaminated.

How do I autoclave the pipette?

Remove the tip, wipe off visible residue and follow the sterilising cycle given in the instruction manual. A steam cycle at 121 °C is normally used. Let the pipette cool and dry completely before use and never use it while it is hot.

Do I need to recalibrate after autoclaving?

A quick gravimetric check after autoclaving is good practice, because heat can affect seals and lubricant. Many laboratories check pipettes every 6 to 12 months, and more often for heavy or regulated use. Follow your own SOP.

How do I set the volume?

Turn the volume adjuster smoothly until the display shows the volume you need. Never turn it beyond the range printed on the pipette, as this can damage the mechanism.

Which tips should I use?

Use disposable tips that match the volume range and fit firmly on the tip cone, because a loose tip causes leaks and volume errors. Tell us the range you are buying and we will suggest suitable tips.

How should I store the pipette?

Keep it upright on a pipette stand. Never lay it down with liquid in the tip, because the liquid can run into the piston and seals.

What is the colour mark for?

Each volume range has its own colour mark, so you can tell the ranges apart quickly when several pipettes are on the bench and avoid using the wrong one.

Can I use it with viscous or volatile liquids?

Yes, with a change of technique. Pre-wet the tip, pipette slowly and, for thick liquids, consider reverse pipetting. For volatile solvents, work quickly and watch for dripping.
